KAWASAKI MICROELECTRONICS (K-MICRO) JOINS WI-FI ALLIANCE
Supports 802.11 Product Interoperability Standards
SAN JOSE, Calif. May 24, 2004 Kawasaki Microelectronics (K-micro), a leader in advanced yet affordable ASICs, today announced it has joined the Wi-Fi Alliance, a non-profit organization formed to certify interoperability of IEEE 802.11 products and to promote them as the global, wireless LAN standard across all market segments.
"We are pleased to have K-micro, a leader in innovative ASIC technology and design support, join the Wi-Fi Alliance," said Frank Hanzlik, Wi-Fi Alliance managing director. "As wireless LAN deployment continues to increase worldwide, it is important to have strong global support for interoperability using the 802.11 standards, thus enhancing the user experience."
"Earlier this year we added IEEE 802.11 a through j technology to our ASIC intellectual property portfolio in order to support the significant growth we expect in the wireless SoC market. We believe this growth will be driven by the needs of customers to couple IEEE 802.11 support with their proprietary designs for products such as printers, digital cameras, set-top boxes, and custom wireless LAN chipsets," said Hisaya Keida, general manager, Product Marketing and Development Department of K-micro. "A key facilitator to the growth of the wireless SoC market is IEEE 802.11 product interoperability the Wi-Fi Alliance shares our goal of IEEE 802.11 product interoperability, and were excited to be a part of it."
About the Wi-Fi Alliance
The Wi-Fi Alliance (formerly WECA) is the global Wi-Fi organization that created the Wi-Fi® brand. A nonprofit organization, the Alliance was formed in 1999 to certify interoperability of IEEE 802.11 products and to promote them as the global, wireless LAN standard across all market segments.
The Wi-Fi Alliance has instituted a test suite that defines how member products are tested to certify that they are interoperable with other Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ products. These tests are conducted at an independent laboratory.
Membership in the Wi-Fi Alliance is open to all companies that support the IEEE 802.11 family of standards. The Wi-Fi Alliance now comprises over 200 members from the worlds leading companies. These companies offer over 1,000 Wi-Fi CERTIFIED products. For more information, please visit www.wi-fi.org, and for information on Wi-Fi ZONE™ public access locations go to www.wi-fizone.org.
